High quality development is what the Chinese coastal city of Xiamen expects to witness during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25). The Chinese city which is renowned for its tourism and marine activities has been gearing up for monumental growth owing to its recently accorded guaranteed leading city status.

Efforts aimed at developing marine sectors in East China’s Fujian province will bring into Xiamen the much-awaited growth, which will in turn drive the marine economy growth. Going by the past plan period statistics (13th Five-Year Plan period – 2016-20), Xiamen’s marine economy had posted significant growth. Looking deeper into the numbers, it becomes clear that, during 2020, Xiamen’s output value of the marine economy stood at 140.53 billion yuan ($22.02 billion), which translates into 22 percent of the coastal city’s total GDP.

During the 2020 fiscal calendar, Xiamen’s emerging marine industries had an added value of 52.44 billion yuan, which is a year-on-year rise of 4.24 percent. This figure showed an increase of 37.3 percent of the total output value of the city’s marine economy. That also means that the emerging marine industries have turned the new growth drivers of Xiamen’s marine economy.

The plan roadmap exhibits a scenario where Xiamen is racing towards establishing marine industrial clusters. This would be further pushed through the promotion of the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements, accelerating cross-border integration, and reinventing business models.

Besides, more measures will be lined up towards accelerating the construction of a national demonstration zone for the marine economy. The zone will house marine biological industries and will also act as global supply bases for marine products.
