Typhoon Faxai, which made landfall in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, on Sept. 8 and 9, dealt a serious blow to the local fisheries industry.
Refrigerating facilities and fish farms stopped functioning because of power blackouts triggered by the typhoon, this year’s 15th tropical storm, forcing local fishermen to dump a large number of fish. Moreover, numerous abalone shellfish being raised at a local fisheries cooperative’s farm have died.
The fisheries industry in the prefecture had suffered at least 430 million yen in losses as of Sept. 17, according to the prefectural government.
