Executives with three large tuna fishing companies, two Spanish and one US-based, called for a stop to the addition of new catching capacity, during the VII Worldwide Tuna Conference, held Sept. 11-12 in Vigo, Spain. Pete Trutanich of Tri-Marine International, headquartered close to the US Pacific northwest city of Seattle; Imanol Loinaz, fleet director for Albacora; and Borja Soroa, general manager with Pesqueria Vasco Montanesa (Pevasa), all made similar points about capacity during the conference.
I think that there is a chance that fishermen can win this battle against fish and so, we are going to lose this war, said Trutanich, referring to the fact that weak stocks are obviously bad for the entire sector.
We have to cap global tuna capacity, establish catch limits and manage FADs [fishery aggregation devices].
