Extending his support to the plight of the traditional fishermen community in Goa, fisheries minister Avertano Furtado said, “I am fully with them, I am cooperating with them, and I will see to it that they get justice.”
The traditional fishermen in Goa staged a protest before the office of the state fisheries department in Panaji for the government’s failure to impose a ban on the use of LED lights and bull trawling while fishing. Nearly 600 canoes and fishing boats blocked the Rivers Mandovi and Sal channel in protest on Wednesday.
“We have sent the order to the coastguard, collector, concerned jetties and societies saying that LED lights are banned,” added Furtado. Asked how soon those boats will be removed from the sea, he said, “Tomorrow the notification will be printed on the official gazette so we will act tomorrow itself.”
