The government’s Command Center for Combating Illegal Fishing (CCCI) plans to spend 215 million baht to buy fishing boats from owners and retire them to better protect the marine environment.

The CCCI, headed by navy chief Adm Na Areenij, resolved on Wednesday that the centre, together with the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry and Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, would spend funds to comply with a cabinet resolution issued Tuesday

The resolution aimes to help fishing operators adversely affected by the government’s push to reduce the number fishing boats. The CCCI will form a working group to carry out the purchases.
