The Sri Lankan Navy arrested 27 fishermen hailing from Pudukkottai for trespassing into their territorial waters on Friday evening and have been taken for interrogation on Saturday. The fishermen on four fibre boats were intercepted by the Sri Lankan navy in the island nation’s territorial waters around 5pm on Friday, said the official website of Sri Lankan navy. Sources said that the fishermen had set out to the sea on four boats on Friday morning from Ayyampattinam in Pudukkottai district. The fishing boats from Jagathapattinam and Ramanathapuram with 27 fishermen from both the districts reached Neduntheevu on Friday afternoon where the fishermen were laying out the net. Going by the Sri Lankan navy’s website, following the arrest, the fishermen and their boats were brought to the naval base SLNS Elara where they were put through a medical test following which they were handed over to the Jaffna assistant director of fisheries for further action. The navy also seized their catch and mobile phones. Sources said that the arrested fishermen could be booked under the new law enacted by the Sri Lanka for fishermen welfare which awards one year jail term and hefty fine on foreign fishermen.
