The mechanized boat fishermen of Island town of Rameswaram today called off their indefinite strike and decided to resume fishing activities from tomorrow. The fishermen began an indefinite strike on September one, demanding the Central and state governments to secure the release of four Tamil Nadu fishermen and 113 fishing trawlers detained by Sri Lanka on the alleged charges of cross border fishing. Talking to newsmen here, P.Seshu Raja, Secretary of Tamil Nadu Coastal Mechanized Boats Fishermen Association said based on the talks with Ramanathapuram District Collector S.Natarajan, the leaders of 11 fishermen associations have decided to withdraw the strike. Mr.Natarajan informed the fishermen association leaders that the Central and state governments were taking initiatives to free the incarcerated fishermen and all the fishing trawlers from Lankan custody. The Collector also assured the fishermen association leaders that the state government would consider their request for providing suitable compensation to 18 fishing trawlers that were totally damaged due to prolonged disuse and vagaries of nature in Sri Lankan custody, following which the fishermen associations agreed to call off strike and resume fishing activities from tomorrow, he said.
