Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami inaugurated a fishing harbour at Thengaipattinam, constructed on an outlay of ? 97.40 crore, through videoconference from Chennai on Monday. Tamil Nadu Special Representative for New Delhi N. Thalavai Sundaram, who lighted a lamp at the fishing harbour to mark the formal inauguration, said the new facility has fishnet mending hall, administrative office, fish auction centre, fishermen waiting hall, canteen, pump room and toilet facilities. The fishing harbour will be a boon to the fishermen from Vallavilai, Iravipuththenthurai, Chinnathurai, Thoothoor, Poothurai, Irayumanthurai, Mulloorthurai, Ramanthurai and Thengaipattinam. Since the 300-odd motorised country boats and 750 mechanised boats are now harvesting 50 tonnes of fishes, worth ? 30 lakh, everyday the new facility will benefit over 9,500 fishermen while giving indirect livelihood to 3,000 others. The new fishing harbour will avert the migration of fishermen to other parts during monsoon, Mr. Thalavai Sundaram said. Collector Prashant M. Wadnere was present.
