Fishermen in Sri Lanka complain that the recent increase of fuel prices has had an adverse impact on the fisher folk in the country.
National Organizer of the All Ceylon Fishermen’s Federation, Ratna Gamage said the government should take steps to reduce the price of fuel before fishermen lose their livelihood.
He explained that the government most often forgets the plight of fishermen when decisions are made to increase fuel prices. “They forget that boats run on fuel as well,” he observed.
According to Gamage, fishermen had to engage in protests resulting in the death of a fisherman for the government to agree to grant a fuel subsidy to fishermen last year.
He pointed out that the question now was whether the government wanted another fisherman to sacrifice his life before deciding to reduce the price of fuel in the country.
