State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development and Rural Economy, Dilip Wedaarachchi, stated that a five year development plan will be implemented to make the aquaculture cultivation one of the most foreign exchange earning industries. State Minister Wedaarachchi has advised the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NARC) to prepare and submit the program in a timely manner. The program to set up fish farming and fish production between Sri Lanka’s two major industries has already commenced. This five year plan will be formulated in parallel with the accelerated employment and economic recovery program. Research has shown that the fish resources are rapidly decreasing in the seas and the high cost of extracting the fish harvest from the seas makes the inland fish farming more beneficial and effective, the State Minister said. Accordingly, the program will be implemented for the purpose of expanding the aquaculture industry in Sri Lanka and earn more foreign exchange through fish farming.
