Sri Lanka’s Meteorology Department today warned the Naval and fishing communities not to venture in to the sea around the island as a tropical cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea is strengthening
The Cyclonic storm ‘TAUKTAE” over south east Arabian sea is very likely to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic storm within next 12 hours and the system is likely to move nearly north-northwestwards and cross Gujarat coast India around 18th May evening, the Meteorology Department said in its weather forecast at 12 noon Saturday.
The sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Colombo via Mannar will be rough to very rough. The sea area extending from Colombo to Hambantota via Galle can be rough at times. The other sea areas can be fairly rough.
There is a possibility that near shore sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Hambanthota via Galle, may experience surges due to the effect of swell waves, having 2.0 – 3.0 m height (This is not for land area).
Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture in the sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar.
Fishing and naval community are requested to be vigilant in the sea area extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.
