Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday instructed the officials of his Ministry to launch a program to increase fish production in all Mahaweli reservoirs. The Ministry aims to increase the freshwater fish production of the country to 238,000 metric tons by the end of this year. Last year the freshwater fish production reached 53,750 metric tons. The water of the Moragahakanda Reservoir has been released to the Mahaweli reservoirs in the North Central Province. Therefore, the total water capacity of those reservoirs can be maintained in the Yala season. Since the commencement of releasing water from the reservoir on January 8 of this year, water is continuously being issued. The Mahaweli Authority says at present, the total capacity of the Moragahakanda Reservoir has decreased only by 5 percent.
