Sri Lanka and Maldives have focused on implementing a fisheries cooperation program between the two countries during a discussion held between the State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dilip Wedaarachchi and Ambassador of the Maldives to Sri Lanka Omar Abdul Razzak Friday (20) at the Minister’s office. Opening the discussion, the Maldivian Ambassador stated that tourism is the main source of income for his country and or fishing is the second highest earning industry. During the discussion, the attention was given to the issue of the fishermen of the two countries engaging in fishing outside the borders and the two leaders discussed how the two countries could work together in a friendly manner so as not to jeopardize their friendship and not hurt the fisher community. The Minister pointing out that some fishermen are in debt to banks, others are mortgaging their property, and other fishermen are pawning their wives’ and children’s jewelry for their livelihood, discussed with the Ambassador on measures that could be taken to avoid the inconvenience caused to the fishermen due to crossing the sea boundaries unknowingly for various reasons. The Ambassador focusing on the Minister’s reasoning assured to take necessary steps in a humane manner. Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mrs. W. Sandanayake and Managing Director of the Ceynor Foundation, Ayesh Ranawaka were also present.
