Peru’s Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) announced that on January 7 the second anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and longnose anchovy (Anchoa nasus) season began in the north-central zone of the Peruvian coast, with a five-day exploratory fishing.
The industrial fleet will be able to carry out their activities from mile 15 and 13 ° south latitude towards the north, according to the Institute of the Sea of ??Peru (IMARPE) recommendations.
The Ministry explained that the results of Operation Eureka LXXI show oceanographic conditions improvement and the availability of the resource that will facilitate the development of extractive activities in the north-central area of ??the country.
The study also revealed, among other things, that 52 percent of the anchovy population, expressed in number of individuals, is an adult population (greater than 12 cm), which is equivalent to 68.5 percent of the biomass, expressed in weight. Also, unlike what was observed in the Eureka LXX last November, the anchovy was the resource that dominated the catches.
The National Fisheries Society (SNP) welcomed the positive results of Operation Eureka.
“Today scientific research has given us good results, so soon we will see a revitalization of the economy in coastal areas by the reactivation of this important sector of the economy,” stressed the president of the SNP, Elena Conterno.
In this regard, she indicated that the SNP reaffirms its commitment to the fishing resource sustainability, with the main stakeholders being in an adequate management, respecting the closures, quotas and inspections established by the authorities.
The Ministry stressed that it will maintain a strict surveillance of the extractive activities to guarantee the responsible use of the hydrobiological resources, having foreseen a five-day exploratory fishing.
In the second half of January, the arrival of the Kelvin wave warm phase will contribute significantly to a greater resource concentration towards the coast.
PRODUCE also said that technical considerations are maintained to provide for the closure of the fishing season when the maximum total allowable catch limit of 1.49 million tonnes is reached, the anchovy summer reproduction period or the catch begins, or catching limit of juveniles is reached, as recommended by IMARPE.
