An offshore patrol boat of the Chilean Navy will sail about 2,700 kilometers in the framework of an operation aimed mainly at the surveillance, fisheries monitoring and control of the maritime traffic of inland and ocean waters of the Jurisdiction of the Third Naval Zone.
The patrol vessel OPV 83 Marinero Fuentealba set sailed on Tuesday from its home port with the objective of carrying out patrol and maritime surveillance in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the southern area, to perform fishing control tasks with the support of aeronautical means dependent on the Group Aeronaval Sur of the Third Naval Zone.
The offshore patrol boat will also carry out the change of equipment of Faro Evangelistas, located in the western mouth of the Strait of Magellan.
During this operation, called Otover, four executive officers of the different frigates of the National Squad embarked on the boat to become aware of the routes in canals and next visit to Teatro Operaciones Austral.
“Sailing in inland waters is quite interesting and occurs only in these southern regions, so it is the opportunity to be able to train different officers of the Navy and in this case, bridge officers of the National Squad to train in canal sailing, which requires greater precision and greater experience in the officer’s professional performance,” said OPV 83 Marinero Fuentealba commander, frigate captain Gaston Gonzalez.
