Sea fishing is going on unabated off Paradip and the Kendrapara coastline despite the two-month ban now in force. The marine fisheries administration had clamped the ban on sea fishing from April 15 to June 14 to let the fish breed. The Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act makes fishing during the ban period a penal offence and this could lead to confiscation of fishing vessels. However, there is little control on illegal fishing, said sources. “Reports of the ban violation have come to our notice. The department patrol squad has so far intercepted three fishing craft for flouting the ban. The patrol will be stepped up in the coming days. We are short of manpower and vessels to nab the offenders. We have requested the state marine police and coast guard to assist us in stopping illegal sea fishing,” said district fisheries officer Gyana Ranjan Samal. “Both the agencies have agreed to our request. A joint patrolling would start in a day or two to intercept violators of no-fishing order,” he said.
