During the visit of Prime Minister of Norway Erna Solberg, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Juan Guillermo Zuluaga Cardona signed the memorandum of understanding for the cooperation of the fisheries and aquaculture sector in the framework of the Norwegian Fisheries for Development program. “The impact of cooperation is to sustainably increase the contribution of fisheries and aquaculture to the economic and social development of Colombia,” explained the head of the agricultural ministry.
In addition to this, the cooperation will contribute to strengthen government institutions, such as the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Authority (AUNAP), whose functions include issues related to the aquaculture and fisheries sector as well as its ability to manage resources natural in a responsible way. To develop this memorandum, a Joint Coordination Committee (CCC) will be formed, which will be made up of representatives of the two ministries of agriculture of the two countries, as well as other related institutions that are considered relevant. In Colombia, about 280,000 families live in the aquaculture and fishing sector. The working regions in fisheries are Pacifica and the Caribbean, while aquaculture has a greater work force in Neiva, Eje Cafetero and Villavicencio.
