A Coromandel fishing company has been fined $6500 for using a vessel for weeks of commercial fishing before it had been certified as safe.
Maritime NZ took the prosecution against The Tuna Fishing Company under the Maritime Transport Act after the Whitianga-based company decided to use the vessel over several weeks without its certificate.
Central Region compliance manager Michael-Paul Abbott said the fine reflects the severity of the incident.
“This company clearly knew the rules and chose to break them for commercial gain,” Abott said in a statement.
