Officials from Angola and Namibia are meeting in Windhoek to take stock on progress made since the two southern African neighbours signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on fisheries in June 2014.During the four-day bilateral consultative forum that started on Monday, the delegates are focusing on Protocol One of the MoU that deals with economic cooperation.
Other protocols focus on monitoring; control and surveillance; aquaculture and resources.
The meeting is also expected to discuss and consider progress made with regard to fishing opportunities, human resources development, socio-economic research and information exchange.
In his opening address, Namibia’s Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Bernard Essau urged delegates to exchange notes on how the two countries can maximise economic benefits from fisheries as well how to share resources to minimise costs associated with management of fisheries, including monitoring, control and surveillance.
Sustainable fisheries are an important tool for the economic development of our two countries, Esau said.
