Mass deaths of fish occurred in Nan Thanyit lake in Homalin Township, causing locals to be anxious about water pollution in the lake. It’s the third time such an incident occurred at Nan Thanyit lake in Homalin Township. Locals from Thaung Thut village in Nan Thanyit village tract are in fear for their health and danger that may fall on their cattle. “The three mass deaths of fishes occurred on 2012, 2014-2015 and October 2018 but it did not happen exactly at the lake. When the fishermen cut out the flow of lake for fishing, fishes were seen dead at the drainage system. We don’t know what those fishermen did in the lake. But we are very worried. If the water is polluted, it may affect health of the people and cattle,” said a local. Thaung Thut village locals are making complaint to authority in regards to article 390 of the constitution that relates to environmental conservation. “It’s been quite a while that we’ve made a complaint to authority. We have sent complaint letter to Department of Fisheries and Human Rights Commission under article 390. Sub-Officers from Kalay, Tamu and Homalin townships’ Department of Fisheries came and investigated the matter. On January 26, a group came and made investigation about water pollution and took water samples. As it had happened often, we are worried. We hope action will be taken and will not happen again in the future,” said another local from Thaung Thut village. Homalin is a small town lies close to the Indian border, at the head end of a bend in Chindwin River.
