Members of Parliament (MPs) from Nyaung Shwe said that by designating Inlay Lake as Ramsar site , it will be more convenient for doing environmental conservation in the region. Inlay Lake Ramsar Site, located on the Shan Plateau of eastern Myanmar, is the second-largest inland lake in the country. Its unique geology has created ideal conditions for a wealth of plants and animals, including many which are endemic to the Site. Elephant grass, known locally as kaing, is important in maintaining the structure of floating islands for agriculture. The endemic Inle carp (Cyprinus intha), locally called nga-phein, is culturally symbolic and important for household as well as commercial consumption. Other fish species such as Sawbwa resplendens, Danio erythromicron and Microrasbora rubescens are also only found in the lake and so are globally endangered; nonetheless they are commercially exploited for the aquarium trade. Inlay Lake was established as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1985 to protect and conserve the rich biodiversity of the wetland ecosystem. As a critical staging ground for migratory birds on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, the Site was listed as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) in 2004. It became an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2003 and was designated as Myanmar’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2015. Inlay Lake is recently designated as Ramsar site. The Inlay region is a total area of 14326.18 acres in which it is the major habitat of bird species and fish species and winter birds’ species and natural floating islands are included. Among them, 5797.6 hectares are designated as Ramsar. MPS said that they hoped more environmental conservation will be made in the region. “By designating Inlay Lake as Ramsar site, it will reinforce environmental conservation for our region. It will be more effective and beneficial by allocating as Ramsar site. It is early to say because the region is just designated as Ramsar and no measures have undertaken yet, said MP Thein Zaw Moe from Nyaung Shwe Township. MP Khin Maung Win from Nyaung Shwe Township said that by doing so, more conservation may be made for Inlay region. It is for protecting natural habitats and bio-diversity area. A Ramsar Site is a wetland site designated of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The Convention on Wetlands, known as the Ramsar Convention, is an intergovernmental environmental treaty established in 1971 by UNESCO, and coming into force in 1975. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. It is also known as the Convention on Wetlands. It is named after the city of Ramsar in Iran, where the Convention was signed in 1971. On August 10, Ramsar Convention has designated Inlay Region as wetland of international importance Ramsar site, site number-2356. Therefore, Inlay Region became the fifth of Myanmar’s Ramsar site. In 2004, Moe Yun Gyi Lake in Pyinpon Gyi village, Bago was designated as Ramsar site, in 2016, Indawgyi Lake in Moenyin Township in Kachin was designated as Ramsar site, in 2017, Mainmahla island in Bogalay township in Ayeyawaddy Region was designated as Ramsar site and gulf of Mottama (Mon State ) was designated as Ramsar site.
