Till March 18 of this fiscal year, the country has earned US$ over 680 million from exports of marine products, according to the Fishery Department. Last year, the country exported over 430,000 tonnes of marine products worth US$ 652 million. Tun Win Myint, head of Fishery Department said: “This is the highest export earnings in a decade. The marine export sector earns between US$ 12 million and US$ 15 million a week. Export earnings are expected to reach US$ over 700 million at the end of this fiscal year. The sector is expected to earn more export earnings in the years to come. Myanmar is exporting marine products such as fish, prawn and crab to more than 40 countries including Thailand, China, Saudi Arabia and Japan. Export earnings hit US$ 482 million in 2014-2015 FY, US$ 502 million in 2015-2016 FY and US$ 652 million in 2016-2017 FY, according to Fishery Department. Myanmar’s marine export volume is relative low compared to those of neighbouring countries. In a bid to promote the export sector, the country needs to implement the better breeding system rather than the natural fishing. The sector can generate US$ 1,000 million every year if the marine products processing factories have to enjoy tax reliefs including income tax.
