Checks will be conducted on factories and farms exporting marine products to Saudi Arabia, Tun Win Myint, head of Yangon Region Fisheries Department told a regular meeting of Myanmar Fisheries Federation. “We will be making inspection tours of 24 processing factories and farms that mainly export marine products to Saudi Arabia. Those factories allowed to export their products must do so in line with the prescribed rules. Export will be banned if they fail to follow the rules. The farms which will be inspected are likely to have the chance to export if they take systematic measures. The Saudi embassy sent us a letter in April to make preparations for export,” said Tun Win Myint. Saudi Arabia suspended import of Myanmar’s marine products on April 1 citing the announcement of OIE-World Organisation for Animal Health that Myanmar’s fish and prawn are not free from disease. Tun Aye, chairman of Myanmar Marine Product Producers and Exporters Association, said: “Suspension is not our country alone, but for other countries as well. All of them are trying in their own ways. Inspections have been made in other countries. They are just waiting for the results. Any inspection has not come to our country yet.” He added that there had been no exact date for inspection. Saudi Arabia suspended marine product import from Vietnam, Bangladesh and India and Myanmar.
