A big number of dead fishes appeared in Mingalar Kandawgyi Lake in Zingyaik, Paung Township, Mon State, on September 29th. The sediment in the lake hasn’t been cleared since many years ago. This lake is becoming less spacious enough for the current number of fishes. The fishes died due to lack of Oxygen. Some suggested that some fishes must be released to the Gadaik dam from the Lake. The sediment in the lake caused the massive amounts of fishes to die. The fishes did not die from poisoning, said Second Officer Soe Win Zaw from Fishery Department from Thaton District. The cause of many fishes dying is from the lack of Oxygen. Fishes were being bred and released into the lake. The average life of the dead fishes was found to be over 10 years. It is the first time of ever of this many fishes dying in the rainy season. The freshwater fishes had died in early April last year due to lack of Oxygen. The fishes in the lake were given sanctuary, said Zaw Moe Aung, an administrator from Zingyaik Township. The Mingalar Kandawgyi Lake is about 6 acre wide and the depth of water is about 12 feet. Fishes were being given sanctuary into the lake. Plans are underway to remove the sediment in the lake and to reduce the number of fishes, according to the Thatton District Fishery Department. Mingalar Kandawgyi Lake is over 100 years old and Zingyaik dwellers regularly release the fishes into the lake. However, the number of revelers at the lake for 2016 water festival declined and thus contributed less to fish deaths.
