The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is set to release the Fishing Rights Allocation Process in October.
Deputy Director General for Fisheries, Siphokazi Ndudane, says a key element to the allocations concentrates on the sustainability and growth of small scale fishing.
Ndudane says under the Marine Living Resources Act, more attention and rights have been given to commercial fishing which is already sustainable in its nature as it provides many job opportunities.
However, small scale fishers make up a community of people whose livelihood depends on fishing who are not recognised under the Act.
Ndudane says good portions of allowance will now be made for small scale fishing and will be included under the revised Fishing Rights Allocation.
We are setting aside Total Allowable Catch for fish that can be harvested out of our waters. So we are now deliberately setting aside good portions for the fish that will be allocated to the small scale fishing communities.
