Maldives: Fisheries Ministry to form three fisheries advisory committees

The Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture has announced that it is seeking individuals to become members of three new advisory committees.

The ministry revealed that it will be forming three fisheries advisory committees, each focusing on a major fisheries commodity including tuna, grouper, and billfish. The committees will be tasked with monitoring and managing the fisheries activities of each of these groups. Earlier, the ministry announced seeking members. However, no names were submitted by the initial deadline. The ministry later extended the deadline until January 19.

Tuna Fisheries Committee

•  Three fishermen representing tuna fisheries
• A member representing fish processing companies (processed for export)
• A member representing fish processing companies (marketed for the Maldives)
• Two members representing relevant associations

Grouper Fisheries Committee

• Three members representing grouper fishing
• Two members representing grouper exporters
• A member representing relevant associations

Billfish Fisheries Committee

• Three members representing billfish fishing
• Two members representing companies processing billfish
• A member representing relevant associations

Members forwarding names for the committees should be qualified individuals, who do not hold any electoral positions or a senior position in a political party.

The committees will monitor the progress and achievements of fisheries management plans. Additionally, the committees will present their findings to the Minister. Other responsibilities include data and report analysis, discussion meetings with fisheries industry stakeholders for proper industry management, and the search for potential policies to improve industry activities.
