A major air-sea rescue operation is underway off the Cork coast after 11 fishermen had to evacuate their vessel after it caught fire and lost power.
The vessel was fishing almost 100km south west of Mizen Head when it got into difficulties early this morning.
Initially, a fire was detected on board the trawler which then began taking on water.
Its crew were unable to extinguish the fire and the flooding became very serious.
The loss of power hampered efforts to respond to the flooding and fire issues. The skipper raised the alarm but, luckily, another vessel was operating nearby and all eleven crew members were safely taken on board the second trawler after the evacuation.
It is understood that there were no injuries involved.
Within minutes of the alarm being raised, emergency vessels and aircraft were racing to the scene.
The Irish Coast Guard confirmed that Rescue 115 was at the scene and assisting in coordinating the emergency response.
