The construction of the 200-metre tall Shivaji memorial off the coast of Mumbai has met with fresh challenge from fisherwomen of Versova Koliwada in Supreme Court on Monday. The SC agreed to examine their demand to review the project clearance granted by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) as the fisherwomen claimed that the area around it would be declared a “no fishing zone”, thus affecting their livelihood. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna issued notice on the petition filed by nine persons from different walks of life who raised different concerns with regard to the project, one being that of the plight of local fisherwomen. Advocate Aparna Bhatt who represented the petitioners told the Court that the project is facing scrutiny in the SC but the concerns of the fisherwoman, the impact of the project on the tidal activity and ecology have come to the fore in this petition. Before approaching the SC, the petitioners had approached the Bombay High Court which refused to stay the MoEFCC clearance and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance granted on February 23, 2015. The HC on November 2, 2018 refused to grant any interim relief. Fisherwoman petitioner Rajashree Prakash Bhanji said there was no way their objections could be considered. Bhanji is the President of Marol Bazar Mase Vikrita Koli Mahila Sansthan which represents 9,800 Koli women.
