The state government has set up a grievance redressal committee to monitor and protect the wetlands in the state. The committee has been set up following the directives of the Bombay high court in a PIL filed by the NGO Vanashakti. The court had ordered the state to set up a committee headed by the Konkan divisional commissioner with representatives of all the planning authorities, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and also the petitioner. Accordingly the district collectors of all the coastal districts, the municipal commissioners have been made members of the committee. D Stalin, director Vanashakti is also a member. The committee will be responsible for the protection of all wetlands including lakes, rivers, mangroves etc.
