High waves in the range of 3.5m to 3.8m are likely to hit the coast from Vengurla in Maharashtra to Vasco in South Goa for two days, as an offshore trough persists from Gujarat to Kerala coast. High waves are likely from 5.30pm on Tuesday to 11.30pm on Thursday. Wind speed will rise due to the offshore trough at mean sea level, which is an important monsoon element, director, India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji, M L Sahu said. While the offshore trough triggers monsoon conditions, the winds will be westerly to southwesterly with speed of 45 kmph to 50 kmph, temporarily reaching 60 kmph in gusts or squall. Waves between Malvan and Vasai coast in Maharashtra are likely to be slightly higher in range, from 3.5m to 4m, till 11.30pm on Wednesday. The fishermen are advised not to venture into the open sea adjacent to Maharashtra-Goa coast during the next 24 hours. Rainfall during the last 24 hours, till Tuesday morning, was widespread, but the quantum of rainfall showed a decrease with Margao recording the highest at 46.6mm. Sanguem recorded 45.9mm, Quepem 40.7mm, Canacona 31.4mm, Sakhali 31mm and other centres on a lesser scale. The seasonal total has touched 879.8mm, but the surplus has reduced to 19% from 21% a day earlier.
