Concern has been expressed in Saint Lucia over legitimate fishermen being viewed and treated as criminals.

Operations Supervisor of the Dennery Fishermen’s Cooperative, Agnita Thomas, advises legitimate fishers to ensure they carry their documents identifying them as bona fide, in order to prevent problems.

“We know for a fact that some people conduct illegal activities in our waters, Thomas told St Lucia Times.

She recalled that recently some fishers from the South of Saint Lucia drifted at sea after encountering engine problems.

“They were rescued by some Vincentians, but they were not treated nicely – they were treated as criminals; people engaging in illegal activity on the waters she lamented.

Thomas told St Lucia Times that the fishers unfortunately, did not have their fisher identification with them.
