The state cabinet has sanctioned Rs 27 crore for supplying kerosene for fishermen affected due to the construction of breakwater for the container terminal at Vizhinjam. Under the package kerosene would be provided for fishermen belonging to Vizhinjam north, south and Admilathura. The kerosene would be supplied for the next two years, which is the time required to complete the construction of the break waters. The fishing community have been agitating against the government demanding solution to hardships faced by them following the construction of the breakwater. The fisherfolk are forced to take a different route for going into deep sea for fishing because of the breakwater. It is estimated that 2,353 boats from the region have been affected. The cabinet also decided to appoint a committee to study the issues faced by the fishing community due to the construction of the port. The committee will also study aspect of job loss and suggest a rehabilitation package for fisherfolk. The fishing community in Vizhinjam had stalled construction of a deep-water multi-purpose sea port protesting against damage to 100 homes and demanding immediate implementation of the rehabilitation package. Since October 24 the protesters had been blocking the construction activities. The agitation was called after the intervention of the district collector.
