There is good news for fishermen, Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa has directed the principal secretary of government, animal husbandry and fisheries to enhance the tax free diesel quota for fishing boats to 400 litre per day and also to provide tax free diesel at delivery point. A delegation of fishermen led by minister Kota Shrinivasa Poojary and Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat met the chief minister and sought to resolve various issues as the fishermen are reeling under difficult times due to diesel price hike, dearth and price fall of fish. Currently, the government has made fishermen to buy diesel with tax and the tax amount is debited from their account later. But the leaders said this process was cumbersome and the payments were delayed leading to distress. Therefore, the members of the delegation appealed to the chief minister to introduce old system of providing tax free diesel at delivery point. The CM has responded positively to their request and has directed officials to take necessary steps in this regard. The delegation also sought the chief minister’s intervention to provide compensation to the kin of the victims of Suvarna Thribhuja boat tragedy. The bodies of the seven fishermen in the boat could not be traced even though the debris was found. The CM assured them that he would write to the union government to provide compensation to the families of the victims.
