The Small Boat Satellite Monitoring Systems recently implemented in Bagdad Beach, Tamaulipas, and in the Upper Gulf of California, Mexico, were recognized by fishing sector authorities of 13 FAO member countries.
The recognition was expressed during the XV Ordinary Meeting of the Commission of Continental Fisheries and Aquaculture of Latin America and the Caribbean, event held from January 22 to 24 in the city of Panama. The event, organized by FAO, was attended by the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries and delegates from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Panama and Mexico; as well as Fisheries officials of FAO and directors of Ospesca and Infopesca.
CONAPESCA presented the characteristics of the Satellite Monitoring System for the Inspection and Surveillance of the Major Fleet, which for several years has been applied with satisfactory results and in coordination with the Marine-Navy Secretariat of Mexico, informed the general coordinator of Operation and Institutional Strategy, Alfredo Aranda Ocampo, who attended with the representation of the Conapesca head, Mario Aguilar Sánchez.
Through this system´s application, CONAPESCA monitors in real time the entire fishing fleet of 2,022 integrated vessels on both coasts of the country. As of 2017, this project incorporated 164 smaller vessels in Playa Bagdad, municipality of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, with the purpose of verifying that these vessels carry out their activity in Mexican waters.
At the meeting, the participants agreed to hold a meeting in Mexico with all the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean to exchange experiences in the systems of inspection and surveillance of small vessels, in order to harmonize operating systems that allow the sustainable use of the fishing resources of the region.
Among the fisheries and aquaculture issues addressed in the event, the inspection and surveillance measures in the different countries for the control of illegal fishing, fisheries and aquaculture management for purposes of sustainability of biological resources, increased consumption of fish, and the use of productive aquaculture potential for food production.
