Indonesia’s House of Representatives has passed a draft bill on Protection and Empowerment of Fishermen, Fish Farmer, and Salt Farmer. The decision to pass the draft bill into a law was taken in plenary meeting today, March 15, 2016.

Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti also attended the meeting as government’s representative. “It’s a historic day for Indonesia because it produces a law that would benefit the people, particularly fishermen and their families, Susi said at Nusantara Building II of Senayan Parliament Complex.

The draft bill had been comprehensively deliberated in Agriculture Commission or Fourth Commission of the House of Representatives.

Susi said that the passage of the bill would help her in realizing protection and empowerment of fishermen. One of them is by providing insurance for fishermen.

“We will provide one million insurance, pending the bidding process, Susi said. Meanwhile, the empowerment strategy will be carried out by education, training, business partnerships and assistance for fishermen.
