The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), operating under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), has launched a mobile application named ‘SAMUDRA’ (Smart Access to Marine Users for Ocean Data Resources and Advisories).

“SAMUDRA” is envisioned to give easy access for users to the ocean information and advisory services. This app serves as a valuable resource for seafarers and the fishing community, providing extensive information on various ocean-related services to aid in their activities.

SAMUDRA aims to promote sustainable ocean activities and contribute to the Blue Economy, supporting marine safety and profitable fishing operations. The app is available in eight coastal languages and can be downloaded from the INCOIS website.

Project Challenges

Systematically gathering real-time data and conducting risk assessments.

  • Establishing hazard detection, monitoring, and early warning services.
  • Communicating threat information and early warnings

Technology Used

GIS, Spatial Analytics and EO Satellite

Solutions

  • Information on a day-to-day basis on the sea and coastlines is made available on the SAMUDRA App. This integrated system disseminates alerts to fishermen and seafarers in case of vulnerable situations.
  • INCOIS has been offering fishing zone and Ocean State Forecast (OSF) services through SMS to around 7 lakh fishermen across coastal states
  • The app provides Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) advisories, guiding them to fish aggregation locations, and improving their catch rates and livelihoods.
  • The app features interactive maps, charts, and animations for a better understanding of the phenomena.
