Modern fishing is one of the most energy intensive methods of food production. It is estimated that the annual fuel consumption by the mechanized and motorized fishing fleet of India has been estimated at 1220 million litres, which releases about 3.17 m t of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere at an average rate of 1.13 t of carbon dioxide per ton of live weight of marine fish landed. Significant improvements in operational expenditure can be achieved by optimizing fishing vessel and machinery design, which results in fuel savings, which is often a challenge, because no standardized design of a combination fishing vessel existed in India and the construction of fishing vessels are mostly in the unorganized sector. This often resulted in designs that are not in conformity to the standard and safe designed as per various international norms. It was in the backdrop, that ICAR-CIFT, had taken up a project Green Fishing System for Tropical Seas, funded by the ICAR- National Agricultural Science Fund with one of the objectives to construct a new-generation energy efficient, combination vessel envisaged as a standard model for replication in the tropical waters.An all India survey was carried out along all maritime states of India and inputs from fishers and other stakeholders were considered for evolving the design of the IRS class model-fishing vessel, F.V SagarHarita, which was constructed at Goa Shipyard, Goa. Field trials for deep sea fishing were carried out by ICAR-CIFT for multiday fishing operations and the results showed a saving of 15-20 % in different fishing conditions, when compared to similar class of fishing vessels in the region.Based on the success achieved in fuel conservation, the Department of Animal Husbandry Dairying and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, entrusted ICAR-CIFT to make the technical specifications of a 22-23 m Long liner cum Gillnetter for the Blue Revolution scheme on all India basis. This finally ledto the signing of an MOU with M/S Cochin Shipyard Limited, Cochin, for design of a 22.50 m Long liner cum Gillnetter for the fishermen, selected by the Dept. of Fisheries, Tamil Nadu. These vesselshave the capacity to venture into deep sea for long lining as well as gill netting operations using hydraulic gill net hauler and long line haulers which are fabricated within the shipyard in line with the Make in India concept of India. The vessels also have refrigerated sea water system, to preserve fish onboard. The constructed is in accordance with the rules of Indian Register of Shipping(IRS) and the Trim and Stability booklet is approved by IRS. A total of such 16 vessels are being constructed at Cochin Shipyard and the first batch of four vessels under this program was flagged off on 19.02.2019 by the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Shri. The flagging off, of these vessels is the harbinger of a new revolution in deep-sea fishing in India, which hitherto was mostlyunorganized. The use of such sophisticated vessels, incorporating advanced navigational, fire-fighting and live saving appliances, will help in a big way to harvest the deep-sea resources along the Indian EEZ and beyond.
