The India Meteorological Department on Thursday issued a red alert for Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry stating that heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy falls likely to occur at isolated places in these states and the Union territory on October 7 due to a severe storm in the Arabian Sea. The IMD also forecast heavy rain at isolated places over coastal Karnataka, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep. It said the sea would be rough to very rough over south and central Arabian Sea. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry received rain on Thursday. In the last 24 hours ending 8.30am, Kattumannarkoil in Cuddalore district and Pullambadi in Trichy district received the maximum rainfall of 11cm each, followed by Tiruchendur in Tuticorin district (10cm). Chennai received 3cm of rain. Collectors declared a holiday for schools in Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Salem and Puducherry districts.
