The Inter Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on Wednesday validated the regional fisheries and aquaculture strategy, the bloc said in a statement. The strategy is meant to help member states in the IGAD region to combat food insecurity, malnutrition build resilience and a clear road map for interventions to be undertaken in the area of fisheries and aquaculture, the statement said
According to the statement the five-year strategy, developed by financial support from the European Union, has identified the challenges on fish resources, their potential and the implementation of an action plan
âThrough the strategy member states in IGAD region will have the opportunity to utilize the fish resource sustainably especially in arid and semi arid lands.â? it said.
The statement added that fish resource is a potential contribution to resilient food security and livelihood diversification in arid and semi arid lands overlooked by member states and development partners.
It was indicated that current fisheries activity in the IGAD region are focused on inland waters located in highlands and populated areas.
In April 2014, the African ministers for Fisheries and Aquaculture met in Addis Ababa and agreed on the pan African Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy Framework and Reform Strategy.
The document was formally adopted in June 2014 by AU heads of state and government.
