Over 80 men and women fishery stakeholders from 10 coastal states and union territories of India participated in the National Workshop: 2017 National Policy on Marine Fisheries (NPMF), India and the SSF Guidelines,’ supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and organized by the International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF), from 19 to 21 July 2019 in Chennai, India. Participants at the workshop, representing key fishworker organizations and civil society, prepared Draft Action Points for an implementation plan for NPMF 2017. These Action Points are now available for comments on the ICSF website. The NPMF, which strives to maintain the small-scale character of Indian marine fisheries, provides guidance to co-ordinate and manage the country’s fisheries until 2027. Towards the implementation of NPMF at the national, sub-national and local levels, the workshop identified key areas for action on fisheries management (including co-management); the development of post-harvest and trade; the protection of the marine environment; adaptation to climate change and extreme weather events; equitable marine spatial planning; and improving governance. The recommended Action Points also emphasize the social development and welfare of fishing communities, and the promotion of gender equity in fisheries. Recognizing the role of international legal instruments and a human-rights-based approach in fisheries sustainability, the NPMF also seeks to implement the SSF Guidelines. To this end, the workshop identified consensus principles between the NPMF and the Guidelines. The Action Points developed through this process will be presented to the Government of India in New Delhi in November, 2019.
