A source in the Intelligence unit of the state government has urged the fishermen, especially trawler operators venturing in the deep sea to practise caution and inform the enforcement agencies of any suspicious movement. We have our intelligence working round the clock and the news about a possible attack on Indian coast including Goan coastline from anti-national elements cannot be ruled out as on today, said a highly placed source in the intelligence unit of the state government. The source informed that coastal security has been beefed up and multiple layers of security are being deployed by the central agencies. The fishing community should be alert because they could be the first target, as they venture in the deep sea, the source observed, pointing out, They have to alert the agencies about any suspicious movement. The source said that the trawler owners need to communicate and explain about this threat to the fishing crew aboard, which is either already in the deep sea or about to leave for fishing. Meanwhile, the state tourism department has asked Drishti lifeguards and shack owners to maintain a vigil along the Goan beaches. Coming out with this information, Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar said that the tourism department has received the alert from the CoP, immediately after which the shack owners, as well as all water sports, casino and cruise vessels operating on Goan coast have been alerted and told to be vigilant and look out for any suspicious movement of vessels. He said that the tourism department will work in coordination with the home department to provide security to locals and the tourists visiting the state, adding that Goa has been a peaceful heaven for the tourists and it would remain so. Drishti Marine CEO Ravi Shankar said that they have deployed additional lifeguards as a necessary precaution and have advised the lifeguards to stay alert. He said that beach safety patrolling will also continue throughout night. Meanwhile, director of fisheries Vinesh Arlekar speaking to this daily confirmed that the department has received the threat input alert from the CoP and said that the message has been passed on to all the fishing societies as well as associations in the state, and they have been issued necessary direction and asked to take precaution. When contacted, vice-president of the Nerul Dolphin Trips Association Avinesh Shirodkar Saturday afternoon said that his water sports association has received intimation from the Captain of Ports to look for any suspicious boat along Goan waters, and if found inform the authorities. He was responding to the message received from the Captain of Ports vis-à-vis the Intelligence input from the District Coast Guard that anti-national elements could have boarded an apprehended Indian fishing boat in Karachi, and likely to land on Indian coast and attack vital installations. We have altogether 160 boats, which take tourists for a dolphin trip, including some boats taking them to the bat island, he stated, adding that all the crew members on these boats have been duly intimated about the message. President of the Calangute Water Sports Alex Coutinho told this daily that his association too has received an urgent note from the Captain of Ports. However, our water sports activities take place only near the shore, he maintained, pointing out, Nevertheless, we have intimated the parasailing boats, which operate beyond one nautical mile, to keep a watch on any suspicious boat operating in the sea. Secretary of All Goa Shack Owners Association John Lobo when contacted in this regard said that his association has not received any message from the tourism department yet. It is only the water sports operators, who have received this message from the Captain of Ports. However, we always keep a watch on any suspicious movement taking place along the shore, he noted. Finally, Calangute police inspector Jivba Dalvi stated that the police have not been intimated in this regard. However, the police have got the information from the water sports operators operating on the Baga-Sinquerim beach belt about the same. We will not take any chances and deploy Indian Reserve Battalion police 24×7 to keep a watch on the shore, he concluded.
