The fisheries department seized a trawler in the Zuari river for encroaching into the jurisdiction of traditional fishermen. Fisheries minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues has asked for a report on the incident and the quantity of fish the vessel was carrying. Traditional fishermen have complained that mechanised trawlers have been encroaching in their area. We had accordingly sent a patrol boat to detect the violation on Tuesday. On inspection, we managed to take note of one such trawler that was encroaching the waters within the set limit, he said. According to the Goa, Daman and Diu Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1980 and Rules, 1982, area up to 5km from the coastline is demarcated for fishing activities by canoes only. Mechanised fishing vessels are prohibited from fishing in such areas. The vessel was brought to shore after being seized and the crew was warned to not to venture within the 5-km limit again. I have asked for a report showing to what extent it has caught the fish and the quantity of fish seized on the boat. Once I receive the report, I will take necessary action, Rodrigues said. He further warned that such encroachments would not be tolerated and asked the patrolling team to stay alert.
