With the fish vendors rejecting Mormugao Municipal Council’s plan to temporarily shift to the land owned by Shree Dev Damodar Charitable Trust in the heart of the town in view of reconstruction of the Vasco fish market, the civic body has decided to seek permission of the High Court of Bombay at Goa to shift them on the footpath in the vicinity of the fish market complex. MMC chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar and its chief officer Agnelo Fernandes disclosed that the women vendors have refused to shift to Shree Dev Damodar Charitable Trust land as they fear that they may not be accommodated in the proposed fish market complex. Gaonkar said, Women fish vendors will submit a request in writing to shift them on the roadside footpath in the vicinity of the existing fish market. Then the council will adopt a resolution in the council meeting. The resolution will then be filed before the High Court of Bombay at Goa in order to obtain/seek necessary permission. We cannot grant permission to shift the fish vendors on the roadside footpath since it will amount to contempt of court, stated the chief officer Fernandes. MMC officials including Gaonkar and Fernandes on Monday held a meeting with the women fish vendors and Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association president Jose Philip D’Souza to finalise the plan for the proposed fish market project and also for selecting the site for temporarily shifting the women vendors with Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) requesting the council to vacate the fish market to allow its reconstruction. MMC is planning to accommodate all the vendors operating in various parts of the town by notifying vending zone at Shree Dev Damodar Charitable Trust land, stated Gaonkar.
