Issues pertaining to CRZ notification and hill cutting rocked Nerul gram sabha on Sunday. On CRZ notification issue, fishermen carrying out their activity from Coco beach raised strong objection to the notification stating that it would affect their livelihood and tourism business will also take a hit. They said constructions from 50 metres of the high tide line would not be suitable and it will have an impact on traditional fishing activity. Sarpanch Piedade Almeida said that the panchayat will write to the authority to look into the matter as it stands to affect activity of traditional fishermen. The villagers also raised ruckus over hill cutting at Fotto waddo and sought an answer from the panchayat as to what action has been taken on a complaint against the aforementioned work. On this, the sarpanch said that a local has carried out the hill cutting with permission from authorities for construction of a house. The sarpanch added that flying squad had visited the site after a complaint reached them. Further, the panchayat secretary read out provisional surplus budget for the year 2019-20 of Rs 13.30 lakh. The villagers suggested to the panchayat making a budgetary provision for aid of school children who cannot afford to pay fees. The villagers said that there are two schools functioning in the village and there are cases wherein some parents, who have their wards in the primary section of the schools, cannot afford to pay monthly fee of Rs 300 as such teachers of these schools are paying fees of some children. In this regard, the sarpanch said that the panchayat will first have to constitute a committee to verify genuine cases and added that they will write to the school authorities to know about the needy students. The sarpanch informed that some villagers were yet to pay the house tax. There was a suggestion from the panchayat to construct a retaining wall at Coco beach as saline water enters the fields. Villagers also raised the issue of the bundh at Bhati waddo that is in a damaged state. At the outset, panchayat observed a one-minute silence in remembrance of former deputy chief minister Francis D’Souza and ex-MLA Vishnu Wagh.
