Fishermen ventured out to the sea on Wednesday following the conclusion of the two-month ban on fishing. While trawler owners in North Goa did not resume fishing operations, those in South Goa, enthusiastic about netting the season’s first catch, were prompt in taking their trawlers out into the waters. About 20% of our boats have left from the Cutbona jetty and are expected to return in a day or two with their catch. The rest are expected to leave in another week’s time. Once that happens, fish prices will come down and the market will stabilise, said a trawler owner Benjamin Silva. Even though the mandatory 61-day fishing ban in the state came to an end on Tuesday night, following which the fishing season commenced on Wednesday, lack of manpower handicapped some trawlers owners from resuming their business. Of the 300-odd boats at the Malim jetty, only one is said to have left for fishing. Most of the crew members and other workers who work on the trawlers have not yet returned from their native places. Until then, the operations are suspended. We will start full swing only by August 10 or 15, said chairman of the Mandovi Fishermen Marketing Cooperative Society Ltd Francis D’Souza said.
