The fishing associations from South Goa have demanded that the wholesale fish market at Margao be given under the control of traditional and local fishermen, so that fresh fish could be sold to people without hazardous chemicals. The various fishing bodies from South Goa district met at Khariwada fishing jetty in Vasco on Saturday evening including those of Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association, Old Cross Canoe Association Owners Co-operative Society Ltd, fishermen bodies from Cutbona, Betul and Colva besides others, wherein they have demanded to give the charge of the wholesale fish market at Margao to the local fishing bodies where they can constitute a committee and operate the wholesale fish market by selling fresh fish to people, without any fear of chemicals. Speaking to pressmen, GFBOA president Jose Philip D’Souza criticized the demand put forth by fish dealer Maulana Ibrahim to obtain trade licenses from local fishermen. What right does Ibrahim have in demanding trade licenses from local fishermen? Ibrahim earlier sought the resignation of the Health Minister Vishwajit Rane and now he is after the local fishermen, said D’Souza. He disclosed that due to the formalin issue, 50 percent of the Goan population does not consume fish. The demand put forth by Ibrahim is out of frustration as he might have suffered losses with the local fishermen supplying fresh fish in the market, he claimed.
