Fishing company Sanford Limited has been ordered to pay $500,000 over a worker’s death onboard one of its vessels.
Steffan Stewart died on the San Granit in November 2018 when he became caught in machinery in the ship’s automated freezer system for processing fish.
Sanford pleaded guilty to one charge under the Health and Safety at Work Act of exposing workers to risk of death or serious injury.
It has been fined $375,000 and ordered to pay $121,860 reparations to family and $35,000 in costs by the Timaru District Court.
