Fishermen in Kenya displaced by the Lamu port have threatened to stall operations at the facility if they don’t receive their Sh1.76 billion compensation in a week.
They issued the ultimatum to the Kenya Ports Authority during a crisis meeting between various heads of Beach Management Units at the Mwana Arafa hotel in Lamu island on Wednesday.
In May 2018, the Malindi High Court ordered the state to pay the fishermen the Sh1.76 billion after the Lapsset project was found to have disrupted both the cultural and economic activities of the fisher community in the area.
Despite the court directive, three years on the fishermen have yet to receive a penny or formal communication on whether or not the monies will be paid.
The government had promised to release the monies by end of May this year after both parties agreed to settle the matter out of court but nothing has materialised so far.
