Fisherfolk of Calayan Island and its island barangays of Dalupiri and Babuyan Claro in the Philippines received livelihood assistance during the Fisheries Caravan conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
BFAR Director Milagros Morales said the caravan team composed of pool of experts in aquaculture and processing shared their expertise to help fisherfolk increase their catch through the use of the fishing gears awarded to them.
She said the fishermen should be responsible to take care of the rich fishing grounds of the islands by not engaging in destructive fishing activities like the use of dynamites, blast fishing and active gears.
The presence of the Community Fish Landing Center in Calayan is seen to help improve lives of the fisherfolk and their families.
The center will not only serve as place to market their products but the equipment to be installed will ensure good quality of fish and minimized post-harvest losses. It will also as a venue for fisherfolk gatherings and trainings to continually improve their fishing technology.
