A ‘monster’ trawler scooping up tonnes of fish off the south east coast of England amid the Brexit deadlock could have dire consequences for British fishermen struggling to cope under the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), a Brexit Party MEP has warned.
June Mummery called out the bloc for its appalling system which makes it legal for the ship 14 times the size of British fishing vessels to operate off the coast of Sussex, leaving the UK powerless to stop it. The Dutch-owned Margiris which sails under a Lithuanian flag has a net 1,950ft in length and 650ft wide which has the potential to catch large fish such as dolphins and endangered bluefin tuna, even if not intended. Ms Mummery fears the giant vessel, which is seeking mackerel and herring, will leave scant supply for smaller boats.
